Character History:
Rose's earliest memories were of a gathering of cats in a clearing in the center of a cluster of trees. He doesn't remember much of it, just that he and his mother once lived with the cats. He can remember playing with some kittens only a little older than himself, and not being allowed to leave a thorny den without his mother watching, and being called Rosekit. He remembers a meeting being called, being allowed to watch for some reason, although he didn't pay much attention to it and didn't understand much of what he did listen to.
He remembers his mother taking him and leaving the group. He remembers traveling across hard rock that hurt his feet until he was ready to collapse from exhaustion and his mother had to carry him. He remembers watching the sky fearfully for birds. He remember's his mother's anger.
From there his mother filled in the blanks of his early life. She told him her name was Hornetclaw, that they used to live in a group known as Fireclan, that there were four other clans, that she was a warrior for Fireclan, that if they had stayed he would have become one too. That they were savages, the lot of them, and it was better to starve as a loner than to sacrifice your life as a warrior for the sake of other cats that would throw you out the second you broke one of their silly and arbitrary rules. Hornetclaw went on to explain how she had been rather lonely in her clan, since all of her siblings and friends had mates and children and she didn't. One day while wandering the territory alone she came across a loner named Romeo. Although she knew that she should just drive him out, she ended up sitting and talking with him. They quickly became friends and started meeting in secret. Soon they fell in love, and she ended up having kits with him. Rosekit was the only kit in her litter, but that was okay. The trouble didn't start until he started growing, and the cats in the clan realized that he was extremely big. That and a few other factors about his appearance led to the other cats suspecting that his father didn't come from Fireclan. Finally, they caught Romeo on the territory and chased him away, but made the connection between him and his son. The leader held a meeting, accused Hornetclaw, and banished her from the clan. She took her son and fled from the territories, vowing to get her revenge on Fireclan for its crimes. Her story always ended with her reminding Rose of his duty to right the wrongs done to them and punish the evil clans.
Hornetclaw was not an easy mother to live with. She was temperamental and moody, and carefully controlled Rose's every action. When he became old enough to hunt and fight, she trained him herself, and kept each session going until he had either collapsed from exhaustion or performed everything he was taught that day perfectly. Every evening she would take the biggest share of food, and if Rose displeased her that day she would take his share of food as well. Her punishments were harsh and merciless, and she inflicted them with the flimsiest excuse. He was never given any sort of choice for living his life other than to take down the clans. She was careful to keep him in isolation from other cats. Although she went by Hornet to other loners and rogues, she always forced Rose to call her Hornetclaw in private to constantly remind him of his duty in life. According to her, all he was good for was taking down their enemy, and he believed her. Rose went along with everything his mother said and did, because he trusted her word as the unquestionable truth.
When he completed his training, Hornet had him leave the territory she had claimed for herself. It was time for Rose to go out into the world and gather the cats he would need in order to fulfill his purpose. Obviously he couldn't do it by himself, but Hornet was growing too old to fight large groups and if he wanted other cats to help him he would need to start interacting with them. So he left his mother, and rarely saw or spoke to her again.
